The project Face the Music or The King of Kassel and Local Nightlife’s Seminal Shift deals with subcultural movements in the Kassel area during the late 1970s and 1980s, specifically the phenomenon of GI discos. Against the backdrop of the Cold War, US troops were stationed here until 1993 (and longer in other regions), with black GIs in particular shaping and influencing the music scene. The richness and diversity of the club scene and music styles at that time surprised and fascinated me in view of the current situation of the scene in Kassel and its surrounding areas. For Black Americans in particular, Kassel became a central hub for music and exchange in the 1970s and 1980s. Many clubs and concert events focused primarily on Black genres such as soul and funk, and later also electro and early rap. This resulted in a number of band projects between US-Americans and local German musicians, some of which were very short-lived and oftentimes released their music independently. Musically, this period produced many exciting upheavals which resulted in genres that were not yet fully formed or were being merged with other styles. In addition to the social context and political background, I am particularly interested in the emergence and transformation of the scene and its potential to create a sense of identity for people from different backgrounds. Equally important are the ways in which racism was dealt with in post-war Germany and the US (which sometimes carried over into life in the barracks) and the various forms of cultural appropriation happening within music and nightlife. With regard to the region, I am also interested in the transience of many subcultural trends and their influence on later developments. Formally, I use three vinyl releases by Kassel bands from the 1980s for the lecture performance, drawing on them to address various aspects and developmental stages of the scene. Further I use my own as well as found photographs, video excerpts from live performances, recordings of parties, and excerpts from interviews I conducted with contemporary witnesses and experts.

    Performance and Installation

In this collaboration we examine the relation between sound and movement through technological means. Our aim is to merge fragments from different artistic fields into a single expression. This unity may be unattainable, but it remains our horizon. The performance uses raw physical and technological elements: sensors, bodies, oscillations. A wooden box-frame, about 2.5 meters on each side, carries sensors that generate sound. Moved by a dancer, its signals are processed by a computer and guided by an artist. The sound in turn informs the performers, creating a loop between the inanimate and the living. Over time the frame is dismantled. What remains is a pile of wood and electronics, still transmitting values, now producing a steady sound that endures as an installation throughout the festival.

In 2024, we collaborated on the short project Angles as an artistic duo. Coming from different professional backgrounds, we are eager to continue this collaboration, deepening our combined knowledge and artistic expression. Moa Florell is a contemporary dancer, performer, and choreographer from Trosa, Sweden, with more than 15 years of stage experience across Sweden, Germany, Italy, and Portugal. Since 2024, she has been based in Kassel, where she contributes to the freelance dance scene as a member of the association Tanzwerk. Alongside participating in collective artistic projects, she develops her own works, including Tag Für Tag and Unveiling Layers. Her artistic practice explores fundamental human themes such as identity, communication, and relationships, with the aim of creating emotional resonance and inviting audiences to reflect on their own experiences. Jonas Eschner is a visual artist and musician from Kassel, Germany, with over ten years of arts education. His practice explores the blend of digital and acoustic realms, merging interactive design with live performance. He works with CG and animation but also programming real time applications, digital modeling, and custom interfaces, reflecting a balance between systematic techniques and human expression.

  • Joshua Weitzel and Samuel Nerl

    Moritzturm (2023) – Installation / Performance

In 2022, Samuel Nerl and Joshua Weitzel took an in-depth look at the role of Landgrave Moritz “the Scholar.” Although his forced conversion of the Kassel population to Calvinism was a violent act of domination, it also led to the influx of Huguenot refugees several centuries later.

“Moritzturm” is part of a series of performances that deal with biblical and religious themes from an agnostic perspective. The performance consists of three acts: Procession / Initiation / Dismantling.

The procession involves transporting 10 vintage loudspeakers in a handcart across the city to the venue.

The initiation is the main part of the performance and lasts about 40 minutes. While Joshua Weitzel gives a sermon in the role of the pastor (based on classics of sound studies and analog sound synthesis), Samuel Nerl builds a cross about 3 meters high from the loudspeakers.

The loudspeaker cross remains in place until dismantling, at least one day later.

The work of artist and curator Joshua Weitzel (born in Kassel in 1989) is based on a social understanding of art and encompasses improvisation, electroacoustic and experimental composition, installation art, jazz, intermedia projects, curating, and art education.

Samuel Nerl studied philosophy at Philipps University Marburg and the University of Kassel from 2009 to 2017, and film at the Kassel Art Academy and Babelsberg Film University.

Through his many years of work in various areas at the Kassel State Theater, he has gained extensive experience in the performing arts.

He has been working as a freelance artist since 2016. The focus of his work is on the visual arts. His projects are characterized in particular by the short-circuiting of ephemeral arts with general criticism of the material end product. His work is therefore characterized by documentary works and significant sculptures.

Sometimes, when I’m doing something—or just sitting around lost in thought—I suddenly hear a meaningless sound coming from the white noise. And somehow I recognize a rhythm in it.

Not that it’s particularly rousing or really invites you to dance. But still… it’s precisely these quiet, unobtrusive sounds that sometimes make me want to just move.

  • Videodilettanten- Elko Braas und Jan Heise

An audiovisual performance based on the bidirectional transformation between video and audio signals. In this experimental format, visual information—brightness values, color intensities, movement patterns—is translated into acoustic structures in real time: light becomes sound, movement becomes rhythm, color becomes frequency.

The transformation process works in both directions—audio signals in turn modulate the visual level and generate abstract image worlds that arise directly from the vibrations and overtones of the music. This feedback loop between the modalities creates a self-organizing system in which sound and vision are in constant dialogue.

Pixel grids become oscillator fields, waveforms materialize as geometric structures.

    Friday 10.10. 11 – 11.15 PM

    Neue Nachrichtenmeisterei

Videodilettanten is an audiovisual collective founded in 2017 by Elko Braas and Jan Heise, dedicated to the exploration and artistic application of analog video technology. The project deliberately moves beyond digital perfection and uses the characteristic properties of analog signal processing—noise, distortion, unpredictable interference—as creative elements.

Videodilettanten develops audiovisual performances that focus on the electromagnetic properties of video signals. Through experimental interconnections, feedback loops, and the manipulation of historical video hardware, lively, organic visual worlds are created that interweave with acoustic elements in real time.

In addition to live performances, the collective also creates installations that treat space as an extended instrument, as well as VJ sets that enrich club and festival culture with media-archaeological approaches. In their work, Braas and Heise regularly collaborate with artists such as Jan Grebenstein, continuously expanding the creative spectrum of the project.

The work of Videodilettanten represents a conscious regression in the history of technology—not out of nostalgia, but as a critical practice that gives new relevance to the forgotten aesthetic potential of obsolete technologies. The project combines craftsmanship with conceptual acuity.

  • Thea Josepha Konatsu

Sound performance with voice and loop station

Echo – the one who was robbed of her voice, but retained the last word. Her voice is reassembled: fragmented, looped, multiplied. Repetition as resistance, resonance as reclaiming space, a polyphonic self, an emancipatory form?

Thea Josepha Konatsu’s intermedia practice deals with dislocation and the influence of cultural influences on the understanding of history and memory. Memories, fragments, and snippets are brought together in changeable montages and woven into stories, moving images, and sound.
